American Indian casinos are big business in the United States, with an estimated 280,000 people employed across more than 400 sites.
That huge workforce is largely unorganized. Only a few such casinos recognize union contracts. Among them is North America's largest gaming center, Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut.
Its dealers recently struck a deal after a lengthy dispute with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe. What makes this agreement different is that it was brokered under tribal law.

ATLANTIC CITY - Local 54 of UNITE-HERE members at four casinos approved a two-year contract Monday that will maintain employee health and retirement benefits, grant raises to most employees and boost protections for workers facing layoffs amid a recession and looming competition from out-of-state gaming halls.

Ballys' appeal of the Atlantic City dealer's union vote was fundamentally the same as the objections pending for Foxwoods - management claiming a translated ballot was needed," said Wei-Ching Siu, a part-time table games dealer at Foxwoods. "We're pleased that the Labor Board agreed: we may speak many languages, but we all know how to say 'Union yes!'."
